Energy Awards 2022

We are delighted to announce that Genius Hub has won a coveted 2022 Energy Award…

About the Awards

With 19 categories rewarding different aspects of the industry, the awards, recognise the leading people, products, projects and services in the sector, from Net Zero Initiative to Energy Champion of the Year.

This year saw the introduction of a face-to-face judging round, where finalists presented their entries directly to the judges.

This round, allowing entrants ‘to tell their story’ in a dynamic process is helping the Energy Awards, run by B2B publisher Emap, become one of the most sought-after accolades in the energy sector. The awards night itself combines industry recognition and unrivalled networking opportunities.

Andrew Gaved, Editor-in-chief of Emap’s H&V News and RAC magazines, who co-hosts the Energy Awards, said:

“This industry has gone through a turbulent time in the last year, but these awards show companies and individuals continuing to innovate, continuing to find ways to reduce energy and continuing to work hard for their customers, whether businesses or homeowners. This sector will be a key player in the journey to Net Zero so we are proud to honour its achievements.”

About the Project

In its search for an effective, low-cost energy saving measure that could easily be retrofitted to the buildings across its estate, The Belfry Hotel & Resort engaged Genius Hub to carry out a pilot project on one of its buildings, Jacklin House. The aim was to significantly reduce the energy consumption within the rooms of the hotel, while at the same time improving guest comfort. Through the simple expedient of fitting Genius Radiator Valves that would adjust the temperature depending on the occupancy of the room, the client found that a lot of heat energy could be saved.

Genius Hub carried out the work during normal working hours, taking only 20 minutes on average to install the equipment during routine room changeovers. The Monitoring and Verification report carried out before and after installation found an average of 64% saving in energy – the second-largest running cost of the hotel after staff. Following the high levels of customer satisfaction, Genius Hub is now being rolled out to other buildings across the Belfry estate.

The Results

Genius Hub has won the Energy Project of the Year: Commercial and Industrial Award for their work with the Belfry Hotel, and was praised by the expert judging panel, who are drawn from across the energy sector: Judges praised our winning project for its innovation and cost effectiveness and for being very transferable.

Turning the Genius Hub off in the Summer

Turning the Genius Hub off in the Summer

As the Summer is heating up, you may not want to use your heating as much. If you are using the Genius Hub for controlling your hot water then you will obviously want to keep your Genius Hub plugged in during the summer, and you can turn off all of the rooms on the app which you do not want to be heated during the summer.

To turn off the rooms you are not using, the easiest way is:

  • Go to the ‘My House’ page by clicking on the house icon at the top left of the app.
  • In the bottom bar, click on ‘Turn Off’
    • This will turn all of the Radiator, Underfloor Heating and Hot Water Temperature zones off.
    • If you want to keep the Hot Water Temperature zone on, just navigate to the zone and change the mode to Timer
  • At the end of the Summer, just click ‘Restore’ from the ‘My House’ page for all of your zones to revert to their state before the Summer with their schedules ready to go.

Adjusting your lamps and lighting for longer days...

If you have a Genius Room Sensor that is not being used in a zone to control heating, you can use it to control the Smart Plugs. The Genius Hub system is primarily a heating control system, so there can be a delay of a number of seconds before the Smart Plug responds (about 2 – 30 seconds generally), this is acceptable for heating but note that this may not be acceptable for lighting.

Step-by-step guide:

  1. Create a new zone on the app which is a ‘On / Off’ type of zone
  2. Go to the Zone Setup and assign the Genius Smart Plug and Genius Room Sensor
  3. Set the ‘Heating Trigger On After’ to 0 minutes
  4. Set the ‘Heating Trigger Off After’ to as long as you want the Smart Plug to stay on for
  5. Leave the setup pages, and change the mode to ‘Sense Mode’ See here how to enable Sense Mode on your Genius Hub
    • Set up the times of the day where you want it to turn ‘ON’ when there is occupancy, the rest of the time it will ignore occupancy
    • Remember to turn on ‘React to Occupancy’ when setting up the times

Rising Energy Prices

UK Natural Gas Futures – https://www.catalyst-commercial.co.uk/wholesale-gas-prices/

Rising Energy Prices

We take a look at the future of natural gas and home heating

It’s being dubbed ‘the perfect storm’. A cold winter, lack of storage capacity and rising global gas demand (in both hot and cold climates) have caused wholesale gas prices to soar to record highs.

Consumers are right to be worried. Energy bills will soar this winter and much uncertainty lies ahead. In the short to medium term, prices should gradually return to normal levels but as the effects of global warming become more prevalent, greater extremes in temperatures may cause abnormal surges in energy demand to become more common. The prospect of continued volatility will not ease consumers’ anxieties.

The first port of call for homeowners is to know what rates they’re paying their supplier and to monitor their usage. Bill payers can also protect themselves by purchasing energy-efficient appliances and use smart meters or thermostats. Some may be tempted to overhaul their gas boilers entirely. Energy companies are already beginning to make the push to convert homes to electrical sources of heating – primarily Ground and Air Source Heat Pumps – but despite their efforts gas is here to stay.

87% of UK homes are currently heated by gas and would have to undergo conversion. Not only does this present unique challenges to each home in terms of space and noise considerations, but Air Source Heat Pumps are also less efficient at lower temperatures (i.e. when they’re at highest demand) and don’t produce comparable heat levels to that of gas & oil boilers. In addition, not all homeowners will be able to afford the large upfront costs (around £6k – £10k). One estimate puts the total cost of installing a Heat Pump at £11,500.

Although not ideal in all cases, Heat Pumps will still play a big role in the next decade. The Department for Business, Energy & Industry Strategy (BEIS) forecasts 1 – 1.7 million new installs over the next decade and the domestic manufacturing market for Air Source Heat Pumps is projected to be valued at £3 – £5 billion by 2035. This is by no means a panacea but fortunately, there is another solution gaining traction – Hydrogen.

The idea for Hydrogen fuel is not new. It emits no greenhouse gases when burned with oxygen, the only product being water. The main barrier to Hydrogen as a fuel is that there are no natural reserves and will have to be produced either by electrolysis (which is costly but sustainable) or steam-methane reduction (which is cheap but unsustainable). Storage and transport infrastructure are also lacking. Yet the UK government seems game for Hydrogen. It recently announced a plan to create 9,000 jobs and £4 billion in investment this decade to create a new Hydrogen Economy, the scope of which applies to industries such as transport and the gas network.
In the context of home heating, the idea is to begin by injecting our existing natural gas supply with Hydrogen at low doses and increase the dosage in the coming decades, with the aim to wean off natural gas entirely. Converting the entire gas network to Hydrogen presents many challenges but a recent trial from Keele University and Cadent of 130 homes showed that 20% dosing of Hydrogen has had no effect on existing gas appliances in the short term. This is great news as it means entire districts will be able to convert gradually rather than all being forced to convert at once. The upcoming ban on gas boiler sales into new builds will give a good indication on whether consumers choose Hydrogen gas boilers or take a punt on Heat Pumps.

In terms of production & supply, as there are no reserves of Hydrogen the role of geopolitics in energy should start to decline. If production can be done right and reliably maintained this will lead to more stability – domestically produced Hydrogen has the potential to reduce the UK’s dependency on imports and could mitigate against another winter price spike.

Today, around 53% of Hydrogen is produced from steam-methane reformation as it is the cheapest. Hydrogen produced from electrolysis costs around £55 – 65 / MWh to produce while Green Hydrogen costs £100 – 200 / MWh. In the UK the price cap for Natural Gas is currently at £40 / MWh so much advancement is needed before it can be made viable for the end-user.

With all that said, without protections against demand, surging price spikes will still occur. The UK government has little appetite for expanding its natural gas storage capacity but recently announced a £1.6 billion plan to convert a recently closed offshore storage facility, Rough, to Hydrogen storage.

The coming green energy transition will involve much experimentation and further energy crises can’t yet be ruled out. Interestingly, this is the first energy transition in history where the metric of success will not be increased efficiency of the fuel source (open fires to boilers increased efficiency from ~20% to ~95%) but the levels of greenhouse gasses produced. This will of course offer little comfort to those struggling through the winter. Whatever the result of the energy crisis this winter, if consumers see red then we need to go green.

Working From Home

Working From Home with Genius Hub

As the government encourages people to return to the work place, companies are looking towards a post-Covid future. For many the idea is now a model that combines remote work and office time, which has lead to the relatively new term Hybrid Working. What does this mean for our heating?

Smart ways to get the best from your heating

Since the UK’s first descent into lockdown 18 months ago,  USwitch estimated that work from home households could have used 25% more electricity and 17% more gas per day, adding up to a yearly increase of up to almost £200 per household for those on Standard Variable Tariffs! For those of you who noticed this increase, going back into the office may be a welcome relief, however as we approach winter (and with the rise in wholesale energy pricing) it is important to make sure your system is adjusted to suit your new schedule.  The good news is that, with the Genius Hub system, you can set as many heating periods as you require for each room of your home throughout any given day, with a multitude of options which cater to different needs:

Modes of Control That Save You Energy

  • Timer Mode enables the user to heat a zone following a chosen schedule. You can change the schedule to suit your circumstances on a zone-by-zone and day-by-day basis. This is really useful for those who know when they will and won’t be in the office every day.

  • Sense Mode is our newest feature which builds on Timer mode by using our Genius Room Sensors The system will  follow a chosen schedule which you can edit at will. In Sense Mode, you can also select periods to only heat up if there is occupancy detected during the selected times which saves you from heating empty rooms! This is particularly useful for those who have to go into the office on different days each week, without your usual schedule being affected!

  • Footprint Mode is our most autonomous feature available to those with Genius Room Sensors or Genius Motion Sensors. In this mode the system will heat the zone based on whether the zone is normally used at this time, and if there is anyone currently using the zone. The timer bars are not clickable in this mode as the schedule is automatically created by your Genius Hub based on previous usage. This is particularly useful for those who would prefer the system to find the best solution for your heating without your input.

Popping home for a meeting outside of your schedule? Use Override Mode to boost your heating for a set amount of time, without affecting your pre-designed heating schedule, no matter if you’re using any of the aforementioned modes.

COP26

COP26 Glasgow

With the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow starting at the end of this month, we thought it would be a great time to tell you how Genius Hub can help make your home align with the aims of COP26.

What is COP26?

The primary goal of The 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) is to secure global net zero by the mid-century, with countries being asked to come forward with ambitious 2030 emissions reduction targets that align with this goal. Business and Energy Secretary, and COP26 President, Alok Sharma stated that “Tackling climate change is the one of the most urgent shared endeavours of our lifetimes, demanding bold action from every nation to prevent catastrophic global warming.” Therefore, this has been formulated into a plan by the UK Government by aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 68% by 2030. This was accompanied by the Prime Minister’s Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution, which would create jobs and sets targets of 40 billion of private investment to develop innovative technologies to cut emissions: in his press release, Johnsons states that by recovering cleaner and building greener we can “turn the tide on climate change”. Recent initiatives, including the Green Homes Grant and the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund, show that tackling emissions from domestic heating is high on the governments agenda. So where does Genius Hub as a company fit in with this?

Our Alignment with Net Zero

Genius Hub aims to be a Net Carbon Negative business.  All of the packaging used from warehouse to recipient is either recyclable or carbon neutral; we have even chosen a Carbon Neutral delivery service to help keep within our ethos of sustainability. We expect the same from the companies we work with; with our largest supplier having committed to decarbonising their global operations by 2030. Our partners, Jigsaw and Castrads, are both companies like us, whose manufacturing processes happen here in the England.

Innovative Technologies and Renewables

We understand that retrofitting homes with low-carbon technologies, such as heat pumps, open therm and hydrogen boilers, will be key to meeting the 2050 Net Zero target. That’s why we are constantly developing and evolving our products and software to be compatible with emerging technology to bridge the gap between strategy, policy and control.

Reducing Emissions: Genius Hub Could Help You Save On Your Energy Bills By 40%

Whether you are one in the 87% of homes using natural gas to heat your home, or you have electric or low carbon heating, Genius Hub’s mission is to bring sustainable heating to homes across the UK. At Genius Hub, we have already developed and continue to build upon our innovative smart heating solutions which not only significantly reduce carbon emissions from your heating requirements, but also produce tangible cost savings: By turning every room in your house into it’s own temperature controlled zone (no matter what heating type you possess) you can make sure you’re only heating the rooms you need to at any given time, saving many customers around 22% on heating bills.

Mansfield Baptist Church

MANSFIELD BAPTIST CHURCH

| CASE STUDY

NOTTINGHAM

Did you know there is no need to turn the heating on at lunchtime on a Saturday to ensure everyone is warm enough on a Sunday morning? Sometimes even longer! This appears to be a common problem for most religious buildings. Jigsaw and Genius Hub are approached frequently to help on ways to heat older buildings. The most requests we get are for support for churches. These are some of the more challenging buildings to work on due to the age, construction, wiring and delicacy needed to when planning and installing. We are usually asked one simple question. Will Infrared work for our church? The answer is, YES! But, the challenge for Jigsaw staff is to find the best way of warming the building quickly, efficiently and with controls which make is easier for members of the church to use.

INITIAL ENQUIRY
The Jigsaw team recently completed a three week installation at Mansfield Baptist Church, Nottingham. We were originally approached along with five other companies to offer our solution for heating multiple rooms of various sizes. Ones of their main issues was that there are so many rooms that each would require different infrared solutions to work. The previous convection/gas system was taking too long to warm the rooms up. Some rooms never reached temperature in some large areas. This caused the congregation to feel uncomfortable in the colder months.

THE AREA FOR INSTALLATION ON THE FIRST PHASE:

  • Reception
  • Managers Office
  • Central Corridor
  • Nave (10m+ High Vaulted ceiling)
  • Balcony
  • Vestry Office
  • Parent and Baby Room
  • 3 x Large Meetings Rooms
  • 3 x Bathrooms
Jigsaw-2
HEATER SELECTION The team on their first visit knew that the Mid Range of Infrared heaters would be required for the larger spaces. Jigsaw’s Made in Britain Infrared Panels would be used in the others. Their expertise were put in to use for calculating the requirements of the rooms, the heaters needed, and the installation processes.
Jigsaw-1
COMFORTABLE WORKING ENVIRONMENT Once an initial estimation had been made, the custodians of the church visited one of our previous church installations in the Midlands. This gave them the sense of what the IR heat feels like and how it can quickly warm the space up. This gave the group the confidence in their investment. Two demonstration heaters were loaned to the church to aid their decision. With Infrared you need to feel it,  know what it does and how far it reaches.

Modernize your home with Jigsaw Infrared Panels

The efficient, greener and comfortable heating system. Made in the UK. Install in homes, businesses and commercial properties. Making your home feel warm.

How to Buy the Genius Hub

New Installer Map

We at Genius Hub have released a new How to Buy webpage with some easy steps on how to obtain an accurate quote for your property. With every home having different features it can sometimes be difficult to workout what kit is needed when creating a quote for a Genius Hub system. That is why we have created 2 easy steps to follow when looking to purchase a Genius Hub system. This contains questions you will need to think about when designing a Genius Hub. You can discuss these with your heating engineer or use one of our heating experts, registered on our new Installer Map.

Step 1:

We have included 5 questions which can help you on your way when first deciding what items you may require when quoting for a Genius Hub system. From answering these questions it will help you build a quote from the base of what receiver unit you are likely to need all the way through to whether you would like the capability of using occupancy detection through your Genius Hub system.

Step 2:

Once you have all of the answers to the questions set out in Stage 1 we recommend moving onto Step 2. This is where you have two separate choices of what to do. You can use our Create your System tool where you can build your quote. We highly recommend this choice if you know what you need and the specific design you require for your property. You may also want to choose this step if you already have an installer in mind who would install the Genius Hub system for you.

Alternatively you can Contact an Installer. This will refer you directly to our Installer Map where you can find a Genius Hub registered installer in your local area who you can contact for a quote and to discuss your project. All of our Registered Installer have completed our Genius Hub Training course to ensure they have the skills required to complete the installation.

Why use a Registered Installer?

 Experience

Use an installer who knows about Smart Heating systems to ensure the installation is quicker and there is no need for a revisit to fix any problems. The installer knows how each of the devices is installed, how to log onto the system, and run through the commissioning checks for you.

Save Hassle

You may want extra work carried out at the same time as the installation, which our registered Installer will be able to help with. This could include moving radiators, servicing your boiler or swapping radiator valves to compatible models.
